INGREDIENTS
- 1 15 Oz Can Kirkland Organic Tomato Sauce (or similar)
- 2 cloves garlic
- 5 leaves fresh basil
- 1 organic yellow onion (Do Not Use for More Traditional Tomato Sauce)
- 1 stalk celery (Do Not Use for More Traditional Tomato Sauce)
- 1 carrot (Do Not Use for More Traditional Tomato Sauce)
- 1/4 teaspoon pure baking soda (or 2 teaspoons organic raw sugar)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
GUIDE / INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare Veggies
- Finely chop the organic yellow onion.
- Finely chop the organic celery.
- Finely chop the garlic cloves.
- Stack leaves together, roll it, then finely chop the organic basil leaves.
- Grate 1 peeled carrot.
Step 2: Sauté & Simmer
- Sauté the onion: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it turns golden yellow and caramelizes little.
- Add 2 sliced cloves of garlic to the saucepan and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant.
- (Optional) Add 1 sliced stalk of celery to the saucepan and stir-fry for 5 minutes, until it starts to soften.
- (Optional) Add 1 sliced carrot to the saucepan and stir-fry for another 5 minutes, until it starts to soften.
- Add tomato sauce: Pour 1 can of Kirkland Organic Tomato Sauce (or similar). Stir well to combine.
- Add chopped basil leaves and mix.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of pure baking soda (or 2 teaspoons of organic raw sugar) and stir well to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer: Simmer the sauce over low heat for another 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Step 3: Blend & Store or Serve
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly. Transfer the sauce to a blender or mixer and blend until smooth.
- Serve the homemade tomato sauce over pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce. Enjoy!
NOTES
Store the cooled sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or 3 to 6 months in the freezer.
